Reality Talk: Black is the New Reality

So, currently there are about 71 reality TV shows that have aired on television. Out of those shows the most predominate ones are as followed:

  • Real House Wives of Atlanta
  • Basketball Wives
  • Black Ink Crew
  • Love and Hip Hop

These shows are the most viewed shows to date on TV channels such as MTV and VH1. In these shows, the black women are seen with attitudes and promiscuous. Even though on Real House Wives, most of the women have upstanding careers, they still have moments where they aren’t presenting themselves well.

“On a daily basis, we are bombarded with images of women of color dancing half-naked in music videos, or prancing around fighting each other on one of these TV shows.” – Tamika Mallory (TV One, News on Now)

Everyday we have to view black women in a a negative light. All the bickering and drink throwing isn’t cool. However, women such as Shaunie O’Neal (former wife of Shaquil O’neal) have created empires off of black women acting “raunchy.” This generation has glorified the women of reality TV.
